Bill Scherlis,
professor ISRI, is the new Director of the
Institute for Software Research International (ISRI)!
Bill has been at Carnegie Mellon since 1980 (except for 6 years
at DARPA) and has considerable experience in software engineering
and programming language research, and in issues in government and
public policy. Bill will be replacing Raj
Reddy, Mozah Bint Nasser University Professor of Computer Science
and Robotics, who has headed ISRI since its founding, and created
a unique organization in SCS, with its emphasis on research and
education that relates directly to government and industrial practice.

to Raj Reddy, Professor
of Computer Science and Robotics, who has been awarded the 2005
Honda Prize by the Honda Foundation! The foundation, advocates "Eco-Technology,"
a concept of technology that does not pursue efficiency and profits
alone, but is geared toward harmony with the environment surrounding
human activities.
Jure Leskovec, Ph.D. Student CALD, wins
"Best Research Paper Award" at KDD'05 (The Eleventh ACM
SIGKDD International Conference on Knowledge Discovery and Data
Mining) for his paper "Graphs
over time: densification laws, shrinking diameters and possible
explanations," co-authored with Jon Kleinberg and Christos
Faloutsos.
Carnegie
Mellon University and BAE Systems, which recently completed its
acquisition of United Defense, will hold a public
demonstration of Gladiator, the first tactical unmanned ground
vehicle being developed for the U.S. Marine Corps. The demonstration
will take place at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 4, at the BAE Systems
plant, located on U.S. Route 119 near Connellsville, Pa.

Fifth Anniversary! Vivísimo was built on unique Web
search technology developed by Carnegie Mellon University researchers.
Vivisimo’s key products are meta-search engines that quickly
and automatically group clusters of information gathered from the
Web for more easy access and understanding. Vivisimo's CEO and Co-founder,
